Reimagining a Classic. Reviving a Community...
The Motown Nutcracker is dedicated to enriching communities through the power of music, dance, and cultural storytelling. Our mission is to reimagine the classic Nutcracker tale, infusing it with the soulful sounds and vibrant energy of Motown, while celebrating diversity and the arts.
By blending timeless holiday traditions with the rich legacy of Motown music, we aim to inspire, educate, and entertain audiences of all ages. Through accessible performances, workshops, and community engagement initiatives, The Motown Nutcracker fosters creativity, inclusivity, and a deep appreciation for the performing arts.
To bring the joy and discipline of the performing arts to underserved youth across Detroit through dance, storytelling, and cultural heritage. We believe the arts transform confidence, creativity, and community pride — especially when they reflect the rhythm and brilliance of our own city.
The Motown Nutcracker — produced by Legacy Dance Studio — reimagines Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker through the soul and sparkle of 1960s Motown. Each year, we produce an immersive holiday performance and companion community programs that:
• Provide free and subsidized dance instruction for children from Detroit neighborhoods with limited arts access.
• Offer mentorship, movement, and media arts workshops for K-12 students.
• Celebrate Black cultural excellence through music, history, and creative collaboration.
